A recent Dexur study of Medicare inpatient data from CMS shows that Rockville General Hospital in Vernon had the lowest average length of stay (LOS) for a 30-day episode of care with unplanned readmissions for nutritional and metabolic disorder discharges out of all Connecticut hospitals at 2.91 days between 2013-2016. Rockville General was the only hospital in the state with a 30-day episode of care average LOS below 3 days. Sharon Hospital, located in Sharon, ranked 2nd at 3.1 days and Windham Hospital in Willimantic ranked 3rd at 3.24 days. Nationally, the 30-day episode of care average LOS for nutritional and metabolic disorders was 3.32 days compared to 3.36 days for Medicare enrollees from Connecticut, specifically.

30-day episode of care average LOS accounts for index hospital length of stay plus any additional days spent in the hospital within the first 30 days post-discharge due to an unplanned readmission. An unplanned readmission is defined as a hospital readmission that occurred through the emergency department. It is important to recognize that patients are not always readmitted to the index hospital for subsequent stays. Hospitals in Connecticut were included in the rankings if they reported at least 30 DRG-641 (Miscellaneous Disorders of Nutrition, Metabolism, Fluids And Electrolytes Without Major Complication or Comorbidity) discharges between January 2013 - December 2016. Discharges in which the patient expired, was transferred, or was discharged against medical advice were excluded from the totals.

During the analyzed four year period, Rockville General also reported the lowest index hospital average LOS at 2.69 days as well as the 2nd lowest home discharge rate for the index hospital stay at 53.13%. The only hospital in the state to rank higher in this metric was Greenwich Hospital, located in Greenwich, which had a rate of 53.42%. The rates at Rockville General and Greenwich Hospital were similar to the national average of 52.46%, but were substantially higher than the 35.65% average for Connecticut Medicare enrollees.
