A Dexur study analyzing CMS Medicare inpatient claims data between 2013-2016 found that Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria accounted for the lowest readmission rate for red blood cell disorders out of all major hospitals in Louisiana with a rate of 17.01%. Terrebonne General Medical Center in Houma ranked 2nd with a readmission rate of 22.68%, over 5% higher than the rate found at Rapides Regional Medical Center. Two facilities in Lafayette ranked 3rd and 4th as Lafayette General Medical Center and Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center reported readmission rates of 22.84% and 22.96%, respectively. Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, located in Alexandria along with top ranking Rapides Regional, ranked 5th with a 23.01% rate.

Hospitals in Louisiana were included in the rankings if they accounted for a minimum of 3,500 total Medicare inpatient discharges in 2016 and at least 11 discharges for DRG-812 (Red Blood Cell Disorders Without Major Complication or Comorbidity) during the study’s time period of January 2013 - December 2016. During this time frame, Medicare enrollees throughout the U.S. averaged a 26.05% readmission rate at the DRG level compared to a 29.38% readmission rate from Medicare enrollees from Louisiana, specifically.

Another DRG within red blood cell disorders is DRG-811, which represents red blood disorders with major complications or comorbidities. For DRG-811, Rapides Regional also performed well in relation to other major in-state facilities; the hospital’s 26.32% rate ranked 3rd in Louisiana and well below the national and state rates of 30.17% and 31.79%, respectively. Although Rapides Regional did not account for enough red blood cell disorder readmissions to be included in the 2016 rankings, the readmission rates for both Medicare enrollees nationally as well as for those in Louisiana was higher in 2016 alone versus the four year period of 2013-2016 for both DRG-811 and DRG-812. Average length of stay, however, has decreased for both Medicare populations and for both red blood cell disorder diagnosis related groups between the two time periods. This could potentially indicate that readmissions at both the national and state level are increasing at the expense of reducing hospital length of stay for patients with red blood cell disorders.
