Dexur’s analysis on 2013 through 2016 CMS administrative claims revealed that Mercy Hospital-Anderson was the highest discharging hospital in Maryland for all sepsis diagnosis-related groups combined, and had the lowest 30-day readmission rate for DRG-871 (septicemia or severe sepsis without MV > 96 hours without major complication or comorbidity) in the state at 17.42%. Only hospitals with a minimum of 3,500 Medicare inpatient discharges and at least 11 discharges at the DRG-level between January and December 2016 were included in this analysis. 30-day readmission rates are a common metric used by healthcare professionals to evaluate quality outcomes and cost of care. For context, the top ten hospitals between 2013-2016 with the lowest 30-day readmission rates for Medicare enrollees in Ohio for DRG-871 conditions are charted below.

There are three diagnosis related groups (DRGs) included under sepsis procedures. DRG-870, DRG-871, and DRG-872—each varying in severity of complications and target areas of injury. Further below is a chart defining all three DRG-codes and the readmission rate for each at Mercy Hospital-Anderson in 2016.

For DRG-871, Mercy Hospital-Anderson was followed by Ohio Health-Riverside Methodist Hospital for the lowest readmission rates in the state with a rate of 17.66%; these were the only two hospitals in the state to achieve a rate below 18%. For DRG-872, the second most common DRG under sepsis related admissions, Ohio Health-Riverside Methodist Hospital ranked as the top hospital with lowest readmission rate at 14.44%. Bethesda North Hospital followed with a rate of 14.83%; these were the only two facilities to achieve a rate below 15%. DRG-870 is the least common of the three DRGs related to sepsis; the top ranking hospitals were UH Cleveland Medical Center and Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital & Research Institute with a rate of 18.9% and 20.34%, respectively.
