A recent Dexur analysis of data between October 2015 and September 2016 indicates that Dr. Nhia Kash Vang, of Oroville Hospital in California, accounted for the most septicemia and severe sepsis discharges out of any U.S. physician with 182 discharges and .02% of the nation’s discharges during the timeframe. Only two other physicians accounted for over 100 septicemia and severe sepsis discharges during this same period, with Dr. Oladayo A. Sanusi and Dr. Nechemia B. Peleg accounting for 143 and 125 discharges, respectively. Dr. Sanusi is associated with three different hospitals in Harlingen, Texas, each belonging to a separate health system: Valley Baptist Medical Center - Harlingen, Harlingen Medical Center and Solara Hospital of Harlingen. Dr. Peleg practices at Sherman Oaks Hospital in Sherman Oaks, California.
The specific DRGs analyzed in this study were DRG-870, 871, and 872, which include septicemia and severe sepsis with varying degrees of complications or comorbidities. Dexur analysts identified all U.S. physicians who performed 11 or more total septicemia and severe sepsis discharges during the aforementioned time period; 5,034 physicians met this criteria and were ranked by discharge volume. Solara Hospital of Harlingen was the only hospital with two practicing physicians ranking in the top 10 for septicemia and severe sepsis discharge volume, with the 2nd ranked Dr. Sanusi accompanied in the top 10 by Dr. Lorenzo R. Pelly, who ranked 10th.
Dr. Vang grew up in Oroville, attended Chico State University, received his medical degree from UC Davis, completed the Stanislaus Family Medicine Residency program in 2006 and spent three years at a local clinic before finally returning home to work in Oroville. On the regional level, Dr. Vang’s 181 septicemia and severe sepsis discharges for California Medicare enrollees during the timeframe gave the physician a 0.24% share of these discharges in his practicing state. At the DRG level, Dr. Vang’s 54 DRG-872 (Septicemia or Severe Sepsis Without MV 96+ Hours Without MCC) discharges for in-state Medicare enrollees led all physicians and gave him a 0.34% share of the relevant discharges. What is even more interesting is that only four U.S. physicians accounted for at least 11 DRG-872 discharges from California enrollees during the time period. Furthermore, Dr. Vang accounted for over three times as many DRG-872 discharges from Dr. Love N. Dalal, who also practices at Oroville Hospital and was the 2nd ranked physician for California DRG-872 discharge volume with 15 discharges.
