Dexur’s analysis of the most recently available CMS data shows Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee averaging at $3,000 less in revenue per patient than the national average, but surpassing the state average by about $700. Methodist University Hospital is the highest volume hospital in Tennessee for Medicare inpatients between October 2015 and September 2016.  Dexur analyzed total revenue, total discharges, total unique patient discharges, and average revenue per patient.  Average revenue per patient was then compared at the national, state, and individual hospital level across all hospital departments.  Total revenue per patient is a significant metric health care professionals utilize to measure patient care costs across the country and to determine the patient population a hospital serves.

The surgical department of Methodist University Hospital, the hospital’s third highest discharging department, saw nearly $22,000 in revenue per patient. This was significantly higher than both the average revenue per all-inpatient discharges and the two leading discharging departments of the hospital.  The surgical department surpassed the state average for revenue per surgical discharge by over $3,500 but was below the national average by about $800.  The inpatient admissions with the emergency department (ED) as a source had the highest discharging volume of the hospital and had the second highest average revenue per patient at slightly over $15,000; this surpassed the state and national average of revenue per ED patient by a significant $3,000 and a mere $300, respectively.  The non-surgical department had the second highest volume of discharges and the lowest revenue per patient of the three departments at an estimated $11,300; this was below the state and national averages of revenue per non-surgical patient by about $400 and $2,600, respectively.

Methodist University Hospital is dedicated to making access to health care easier for their communities.  They are a teaching medical facility for the University of Tennessee and actively provide free patient care and program funding through the Church Health Center and Christ Community Health services.  Through the Methodist Healthcare Foundation/Le Bonheur Foundations they have been able to provide site specific care points for things such as screenings, hospice residencies and for sickle cell patients.  Their commitment to providing health care for low-income patient populations may speak on their lower revenue per patient compared to the national.
