A Dexur analysis of Medicare data from 2016 shows that Dr. Kirby D. Hitt of Scott & White Medical Center – Temple accounted for the most hip and knee replacement discharges of any Central Texas physician with 275. The 2nd ranked physician was Dr. Ronald Thane Morgan of Quail Creek Surgical Hospital in Amarillo, whose 200 discharges were 75 fewer than those of Dr. Hitt. The 3rd ranking physician was Dr. Shelby Carter, who accounted for 197 discharges practicing primarily at St. David’s Medical Center in Austin and the 4th ranking physician was Dr. Tyler D. Goldberg of St. David's North Austin Medical Center, who accounted for 161 discharges. Dr. E. Matthew Heinrich and Dr. Christopher S. English tied for 5th in discharge volume with 146 discharges each; Dr. English practiced at St. David’s Medical Center while Dr. Heinrich split his time between The Hospital at Westlake Medical Center in West Lake Hills and St. David’s Medical Center.

Central Texas physicians were included in the rankings if they performed at least 11 procedures as the operating physician for DRG-470, which represents major joint replacement or reattachment of lower extremity without major complication or comorbidity. Nationally, Medicare enrollees accounted for a total of 519,701 DRG-470 discharges in 2016, including 32,194 from all Texas enrollees. The other diagnosis related group within hip and knee replacement is DRG-469 (Major Joint Replacement or Reattachment of Lower Extremity With Major Complication or Comorbidity), which comprised 27,239 discharges from U.S. Medicare enrollees, including 1,785 from enrollees within Texas.

Dr. Hitt has been the highest volume hip and knee physician not only in 2016 but in 2015 as well with 233 discharges. Dr. Carter ranked 2nd in 2015 with 188 discharges while Dr. Heinrich ranked 3rd with 173. Dr. Morgan ranked 4th with 171 and Dr. Goldberg ranked 5th with 146.
