A recent Dexur study analyzed DRG-065 (Intracranial Hemorrhage Or Cerebral Infarction With Complication Or Comorbidity Or TPA In 24 Hours) Medicare discharge data for all U.S. hospitals between January - December 2016 and found that Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation - West Orange in northern New Jersey accounted for 554 discharges, the most of any U.S. hospital. The 2nd ranked hospital, also located in northern New Jersey, was JFK Medical Center in Edison where 392 discharges were reported. The only other U.S. hospital to account for over 300 DRG-065 discharges during the analyzed time period was 3rd ranked Christiana Hospital in Delaware. These facilities are all in close proximity to one another as the three fall within a 100-mile radius.

Intracranial Hemorrhage or Cerebral Infarction separates into three diagnosis related groups; DRG-064, DRG-065, and DRG-066 each represent intracranial hemorrhage or cerebral infarction, with varying presences of complication, comorbidity, or tissue plasminogen activator (TPA). Intracranial hemorrhage or cerebral infarction was the hospital’s most commonly seen condition during the time period, accounting for 915 total discharges with DRG-065 being the highest volume DRG of the three.

Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation - West Orange is the nation’s largest rehabilitation hospital and was one of only 14 facilities to be federally selected by the National Institute on Disability Rehabilitation and Research for the treatment and research of brain injury. Furthermore, the hospital was one of only 8 facilities to be selected by the aforementioned organization as a Model System for the treatment and research of both brain injury and spinal cord injury. At Kessler’s dedicated Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center, the hospital staff aims to assist in the recovery of individuals from injuries of varying levels of severity – from patients who arrive in a minimally conscious state to those who require outpatient cognitive rehabilitation.
