According to a recent analysis by Dexur using CMS administrative claims data from January through December 2016, Baptist Health Louisville Hospital located in Louisville, Kentucky earned less revenue per patient compared to the state and national averages by 30.33% and 39.27%, respectively. Dexur analyzed total revenue, total discharges, and average revenue per patient. Average revenue per patient was then compared at the national, state, and individual hospital levels across all hospital departments. Total revenue per patient is a key metric that healthcare professionals utilize to measure patient care costs across the country; it can also be used to identify the needs of the patient population that a hospital serves. Looking at the table below, the top three highest volume Medicare inpatient discharging divisions at Baptist Health Louisville Hospital were cardiovascular, orthopedics, and pulmonology. The cardiovascular discharges earned a lower revenue per patient compared to the state and national averages by 8.67% and 24.06%, respectively. The orthopedic division earned less revenue compared to the state by 20.04%, and lower than the nation by 26.27%. The pulmonology discharges earned the least amount of revenue per patient, of these three divisions, compared to the state average by 37.86%, and compared to the national average by 43.21%.

Baptist Health Louisville Hospital’s cardiovascular team is one of the most renowned in Kentucky. It has high designations from the American Heart Association; no other health care system’s heart care facility in Kentucky has been recognized by the American Heart Association. Their approach to patient care is progressive and personalized for each patient. In addition to the routine screenings, they also utilize new practices to detect early signs of heart and vascular diseases. Their diagnostic process implements the usage of specialized equipment to rapidly and accurately identify the condition of patients. Their initial standard approach for each patient at point of admission may be less costly as a whole due to their continuous access to the tools they’re proactively using - ultimately resulting in less revenue per patient.
