According to a study of Medicare inpatient discharges by Dexur analysts, Dr. John W. Beckner, of Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton, had a 12.3% readmission rate for psychoses discharges between 2013-2016, the lowest rate of any physician in Georgia. The only other physician in the state with a readmission rate below 15% was Dr. Dan Phillips of Navicent Health, who ranked 2nd with a 14.4% rate. Dr. Muhammad Sandvi, who practices at Hamilton Medical Center along with Dr. Beckner, ranked 3rd with an 18.4% readmission rate while Dr. Deepti Bhasin of Houston Medical Center in Warner Robins ranked 4th with a 19.1% rate. Dr. Prema Sanne ranked 5th at 19.4%, while splitting time between Peachford Hospital in Atlanta and Georgia Regional Hospital at Savannah, located in Savannah.
Psychoses encompasses a variety of conditions including bipolar disorder, major depressive disorders and multiple forms of schizophrenia. The top 50 highest volume Georgia physicians for DRG-885 (Psychoses) discharges were included in Dexur's rankings. Each physician in this analysis accounted for at least 20 discharges. However, all physicians, regardless of whether they ranked among the top 50 for discharge volume, were included in national and state averages. Nationally, Medicare enrollees averaged a 28.05% readmission rate for psychoses discharges, compared to a 25.02% rate for Medicare enrollees from Georgia.
In addition to being readmitted the least frequently, Dr. Beckner's patients also spent very little time in the hospital during the initial stay compared to other psychoses patients in Georgia. Dr. Beckner's 4.8 day average length of stay (LOS) for the index discharge ranked 2nd in the state. The only physician to have a lower index hospital average LOS was Dr. Heerain Shah of Northeast Medical Center Gainesville, who accounted for a 4.1 day rate. Dr. Shah had the 8th lowest readmission rate at 20.6%. Along with Dr. Shah, Dr. Beckner's average LOS was under half of both the national and state averages of 11.6 and 10.67 days, respectively.
