Fulton County Health Center in Wauseon accounted for the lowest 30-day episode of care average length of stay (LOS) with unplanned readmissions for Medicare inpatient kidney and UTI discharges out of all Ohio hospitals at 2.47 days between 2013-2016, according to Dexur analysts. This was nearly 2 days lower than the national average of 4.43 days and roughly a day and a half lower than the 3.95 day average for Ohio Medicare enrollees. Two OhioHealth facilities ranked 2nd and 3rd as OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital in Athens ranked a close 2nd at 2.48 days and OhioHealth Dublin Methodist Hospital ranked 3rd at 2.63 days.
30-day episode of care average LOS is comprised of the index hospital length of stay along with any additional days in the hospital from an unplanned readmission within 30 days post-discharge. Unplanned readmissions are defined as those in which the patient was readmitted through the emergency department. It is important to note that patients are not always readmitted to the index hospital for subsequent stays. Hospitals in Ohio were included in the rankings if they accounted for at least 30 DRG-690 (Kidney And Urinary Tract Infections Without Major Complication or Comorbidity) discharges between January 2013 - December 2016. Discharges where the patient expired, was transferred, or was discharged against medical advice were excluded.
Amazingly, between 2013 - 2016, every single hospital in Ohio had a 30-day episode of care average LOS below the national average of 4.43 days. Furthermore, every Ohio hospital also had an index hospital stay average LOS below the 3.71 day national average. In 2016 alone, 91 of the 100 Ohio hospitals included in the rankings had a 30-day episode of care average LOS below the national average of 4.3 days. In 2016, Fulton County Health Center again had the lowest 30-day episode of care in the state in at 1.85 days, over half a day improved from their rate found for the four year period of 2013-2016.
