Dexur analysts have conducted a study on Medicare inpatient renal failure discharges and found that Baptist Memorial Hospital - Desoto in Southaven accounted for the lowest readmission rate of all major Mississippi hospitals in 2016 at a mere 13.49%. The hospital’s readmission rate was over 4.5% lower than the 2nd ranked hospital, as Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg reported an 18.13% readmission rate. North Mississippi Medical Center - Tupelo ranked 3rd with a 19.65% readmission rate and joined Baptist Memorial Hospital - Desoto and Forrest General Hospital as the only three Mississippi facilities to report a readmission rate under 20% for renal failure discharges. Anderson Regional Medical Center, located in Meridian, and St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson tied for 4th ranked with a 21.43% readmission rate.

Inpatient discharge data was collected from CMS and Mississippi hospitals were included in the rankings if they accounted for a minimum of 3,500 total inpatient discharges and at least 11 DRG-683 (Renal Failure With Complication Or Comorbidity) readmissions between January - December 2016. During this time period, the national DRG-683 readmission rate for Medicare enrollees was 23.44%, only three quarters of a percent higher than the 22.7% readmission rate for Medicare enrollees from Mississippi, specifically.

The renal failure readmission rate at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Desoto has improved significantly over the past few years. Between January 2013 - December 2016, Baptist Memorial Hospital - Desoto only ranked 6th for lowest readmission rate out of all major Mississippi hospitals at 23.08%. Furthermore, with a 9.59% decrease, their readmission rate saw the largest decrease of all major Mississippi facilities between 2016 and the four year time period of 2013-2016.
